Vitamin D supplementation and the change in bone density
For the new study, nearly 400 subjects was administered in a the age of 70 years or older randomly to one of three doses of Vitamin D. The Participants took Vitamin D for a period of one year once in a month. The doses were 300 micrograms, 600 micrograms, or 1200 micrograms (equivalent to a daily dose of 10 µg, 20 µg or 40 µg). The aim of the study was to measure in these older people, the effect of Vitamin D supplementation on change in bone mineral density (BMD), an accepted indicator of bone strength, and the change in markers of bone metabolism. The results show that it has not changed in the bone density between the three doses over a period of twelve months.
