Copper Is TikTok's Biggest Hair Color Trend Right Now

TikTok not only hypes up affordable beauty products and small businesses, but it's also spawning hair color trends. Lately, it's all about copper hair. People seen to be more curious about being a redhead than usual and dyeing their hair a vibrant ginger hue. Sierra Kener, a hairstylist at Los Angeles' Nine Zero One, credits Gigi Hadid's recent dye job and Netflix's The Queen's Gambit for the recent rise of copper hair on TikTok.

Its popularity may also be due in part to Gen Z wanting a striking change for spring, says New York City-based hairstylist Rachel Bodt. "I think we are all in a place where we want that," she adds.

Plus, the fun, fiery shade is versatile. You can add striking copper highlights to your hair or go auburn all-over. It also flatters just about everyone if you go with the right tone, Beverly Hills-based colorist Cherin Choi tells Allure. (She, herself, has been ginger for some time now, as seen below.) "It brings warmth to the skin," she adds.

Copper isn't limited to hair texture either. Earlier this year, hairstylist and colorist Daisy Henson told Allure she's been seeing a lot of people with kinky, curly, or Afro-textured hair gravitating to the color. Allow SZA's gorgeous auburn Afro to convince you. You could even add some copper to your favorite protective styles.

Instead of trying to figure out the right shade and depth of copper works with your complexion and its undertones, leave the work to someone with a trained eye, aka a professional colorist. They'll be able to gauge whether you should go with a cooler-toned variation or a warmer one. (They'll also take your eye color into consideration, Bodt notes.) For your hair appointment, be sure to bring in photos (or showing your colorist TikToks) of the copper hair your desire, too, Kener recommends.

However, if you prefer to take on this project at home, "a good rule of thumb is to choose [a shade of copper] that has similar undertones to your skin," Bodt says. You may want to check out Good Dye Young's Riot and Peach Fuzz shades. The brand's co-founder and colorist Brian O'Connor recently shared with Allure that sales for them have been skyrocketing lately.

Copper hair is quite the undertaking and notably high maintenance, though, as many colorists tell Allure. It requires a root touchup and gloss about every six weeks to maintain its brightness and intensity, according to New York City-based colorist Aura Friedman.

You can dabble in the hue first by trying it out with just a red gloss or some highlights. If you already are a balayage person, Choi suggests asking your colorist to add a copper toner to them, which will wash out after a couple of weeks.

Overtone Coloring Conditioner

For those ready to take on a full head of red, be sure to shampoo your hair less often, Bodt points out. And when you do, reach for a color-safe, sulfate-free one, such as the Best of Beauty-winning Hair Food White Nectarine & Pear Color Protect Shampoo, and rinse it out with cold water. For conditioner, the colorists share copper color-depositing conditioners, like the Kristin Ess Color Depositing Conditioner in Terracotta, will help keep your color vibrant until your next hair appointment. But, let's go schedule that copper dye job first.
