Appearing on ITV’s This Morning on Thursday, February 25, Dr Nighat discussed the new NHS trial offering women to perform their own smear tests in the comfort of their own home – although, in actual fact, it’s to pick up a HPV infection. The NHS England home trial will focus on identifying an infection with HPV – a virus that can lead on to cervical cancer. The original intimate health check-up usually requires a nurse or doctor to place a speculum – a medical tool, made of plastic or metal – up the vagina to grab a “smear”.
This tends to pick up any abnormal cell changes in the cervix – with most people pronouncing the word as sur-VE-call.
