There is no magical pill when it comes to suddenly having thick and luscious hair, but research does pinpoint certain herbs, vitamins and minerals which could help.

Ginkgo biloba has been proven to potentially help slow the hair loss process down and even promote new growth.

It’s important to note that most research that has been done has been on animals.

Additional studies are needed to prove the effectiveness on humans.

What is ginkgo biloba?

Ginkgo biloba is a popular supplement and one of the top-selling herbal medicines out there.

Ginkgo biloba extract is collected from the dried green leaves of the plant and also available in liquid extracts, capsules and tablets.

The therapeutic properties of the ginkgo plant are said to include treatment for blood disorders and memory problems, enhancement of cardiovascular function and to help improve eye health.

Ginkgo contains high levels of flavonoids and terpenoids, antioxidants which protect the body against oxidative cell damage from harmful free radicals.

How can ginkgo biloba help with hair loss?

When it comes to igniting the hair follicles in a natural way, ginkgo biloba is a great option.

Regularly applying this herbal infusion to the roots is known to help increase blood circulation throughout the scalp.

This in turn helps to accelerate hair growth.

What the study said

In a study with MPB Research, ginkgo biloba and its effectiveness in helping to treat hair loss was investigated.

The study noted: “Hair loss is not a story of only reduced circulation per se; however, several studies show that it plays a significant contributing role in alopecia.

“DHT and insulin resistance are both associated with the microvascular insufficiency that result in the progressive miniaturisation of the hair follicle.

“Fortunately, this process can be countered by both topical and systematic means.

“The systematic ingestion of ginkgo biloba extracts has been shown to increase and maintain peripheral micro capillary circulation, ultimately improving or maintaining hair growth.”

Thanks to the properties of this plant and its contribution in flavonoids and amino acids like arginine, methionine and cystine, it all helps to improve circulation and increase blood flow in the hair follicles.

Ginkgo biloba is one of the best-known medicinal plants and this long living tree, originally from China, has become an important pillar in traditional medicine.

Always speak to your doctor before embarking on new herbs, vitamins or minerals for hair loss.
