Not only can diarrhoea be a nasty sickness, but it can also leave you stuck at home unable to venture out. If that’s the case, you’re going to be glad you know these five home remedies to soothe diarrhoea.

If you’re suffering with diarrhoea, you may not want to risk a trip to the supermarket or pharmacy to pick up some medicine.

Luckily, you may already have everything you need to make an effective home remedy for diarrhoea.

If you have severe diarrhoea, or you are caring for a young child or older adult with diarrhoea, you should seek medical advice as for these vulnerable age groups diarrhoea can be life-threatening.

Whatever your age, if you are often getting unwell with diarrhoea you should speak to your doctor about what could be causing your symptoms.

Home remedies are best suited to adults with a milder case of diarrhoea.

These are five of the most effective home remedies for diarrhoea.

1 – Water

When you have diarrhoea, it’s crucial you stay well hydrated.

For adults, if you have any sports drinks this will help you rehydrate.

Any caffeinated drinks or alcohol should be avoided as they’re likely to make your diarrhoea worse.

If you have breastfeeding children, you should continue to breastfeed or formula feed them if they have diarrhoea.

2 – Probiotics

Probiotics are the good bacteria in your gut to create a healthy environment.

These microorganisms can be found in some foods, including:

  • Cottage cheese
  • Dark chocolate
  • Kefir
  • Pickles including kimchi and sauerkraut
  • Miso
  • Sourdough
  • Yoghurt

So, if you’re able to stomach any of these foods, give them a go.

Or, try adding a small amount of apple cider vinegar to water and drinking it: ACV contains healthy gut bacteria.

You can also get probiotics in powder form.

3 – Eating low-fibre foods

You may not feel much like eating after experiencing diarrhoea, but some foods can improve diarrhoea symptoms and prevent you from getting sicker as a result of not eating anything.

Low-fibre and plain-tasting foods are recommended if you have diarrhoea, such as the following foods known as BRAT foods.

These are:

  • Bananas
  • Rice
  • Apple sauce
  • Toast

4 – Drink bitters and soda

If you have any bitters around, try adding a few drops of bitters to sparkling water, or ginger ale.

The herbs used to make bitters are thought to help with nausea and settle your stomach while getting more fluids will help you stay hydrated.

5 – Rest

Diarrhoea can really take it out of you, you need to get enough rest to give your body a chance to recover.

You’ll be feeling weak and probably not eating as much as you should be, so take a large bottle of water to bed and try to get some sleep.
