Finding Nemo
This Disney movie has it all, with a great storyline and lots of movie magic to make it a family favourite! A heartbroken father, in the depths of despair, does not give up the search for his son, Nemo. This timid clownfish is definitely the best father there ever was!
Lion King
Perfect for little children, snuggle up and watch this movie about a crown prince who grows up haunted by the idea that he was responsible for his father’s death. Exiled from the pride by his uncle, the lion cub faces up to his responsibilities and finally follows in the footsteps of his father, the Lion King. The perfect coming of age film to get the familial emotions going!
The Gruffalo’s Child
This short film, based on Julia Donaldson’s children’s book by the same name, is something that your child would love to watch on repeat, so be warned! The sequel to The Gruffalo, where the monstrous character is terrified by a little mouse, his daughter now goes looking for the Big Bad Mouse in the snowy woods, despite her father’s admonitions. A lovely film—and book—to enjoy with your child!
Pursuit of happiness
Rated PG 13 for certain language concerns, this Will Smith-starrer is inspired by the true story of an American salesman struggling to make a life for himself and his five-year-old son. While he interns for a job without a salary, the duo are evicted from their home and are forced to find shelter in the streets. It’s a moving tale of triumph of the spirit as the father keeps his son’s happiness in focus and eventually finds success as a Wall Street legend.
Bicycle Thieves
Recommended for kids aged 12 years and above, we’re not sure your child would sit through this black and white film, but it’s certainly worth a try. This iconic and moving 1948 film, directed by Vittorio De Sica, tells the story of a labourer, Antonio, who loses his bicycle right after securing a job putting up posters around town, after two years of unemployment. On foot, as the father and son roam the streets of Rome looking for the thief, it makes for several emotional and bleak moments.
