If there’s one thing parents know, it’s this: kids love to get dirty. And, unlike brushing their teeth or eating their veggies, it’s one beneficial thing that’s actually easy to get them to do. After all, dirt is literally good for kids! Just ask microbiologist Jack Gilbert, who authored Dirt is Good: The Advantage of Germs for Your Child’s Developing Immune System

(which, psst, is on sale right now).

When asked what parents are getting wrong when it comes to keeping their kids clean, Gilbert told NPR, “Some of the main things are over-sterilizing their environment, keeping their children from ever getting dirty. So going out into the backyard and playing in the mud, and then as soon as they’re filthy, bringing them in and sterilizing their hands with antiseptic wipes, and then making sure that none of the dirt gets near their faces.” He says exposure to dirt can actually help strengthen their immune systems.

How perfect, then, that April is Earth Month – and that April 14th is National Gardening Day. Because there’s no better time to introduce your kids to not only the fun of playing in the dirt (and apparently, the benefits!), but to the joy of growing things, and that’s where Back to the Roots kids’ gardening kits come in. Planting an easy, kid-friendly indoor garden will teach children about the process of growth and where our food comes from, and also patience — which pretty much anyone could use a smidge more of.

As a bonus, for each gardening kit purchased, Back to the Roots will donate a gardening kit and STEM curriculum to the elementary school of your choice through its “Grow One, Give One” initiative; all you’ve got to do is upload a photo of your kit to Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #GrowOneGiveOne and tag Back to the Roots.

If all that isn’t enough convincing, just listen to celebrity moms Gabrielle Union and Drew Barrymore, who checked out the gardening kits themselves.

If you’re ready to get your hands in some dirt, and introduce your kiddos to all the fun and fascination that goes along with it, check out some of our favorite Back to the Roots kids gardening kits.
