Hindi Diwas 2018: 5 ways to help your child learn the language

Hindi Diwas is annually celebrated on September 14. It is on this day in 1949 that Hindi, written in Devanagari script, became the official language of India. Hindi is spoken by 250 million people as their original language and is the fourth most spoken language in the world. On this day, we bring you some tips on how you can help your child learn Hindi:

Read Hindi literature together

To help your child develop an interest in Hindi literature, introduce him or her to children’s books in Hindi. Some interesting books include Potli Baba Ki Kahani series or Pinocchio by Gulzar; Panch-Parmeshwar or Poos ki Raat by Premchand, among other classics. A lot of Hindi stories are also available in the audio format, which your child can listen to in case he or she doesn’t prefer reading, such as Karadi Tales and Boskys Panchatantra by Gulzar.

Use Hindi learning apps

A lot of kids today like to play with smartphones. Instead of taking away the phone from your child’s hand, you can put it to use by introducing him or her to Hindi learning apps. Kids Hindi Learning, Learn Hindi, Speak Hindi, and Hindi Kids Learning are some of the apps you can use.

TV shows and films

Films and shows for kids in Hindi can also help your child learn the language, including cartoon series in Hindi or film adaptations in Hindi of popular books or classics. Some of them are Doraemon, Noddy, and moral stories for kids available on YouTube, apart from child-friendly Bollywood movies.

Make your kid read bilingual picture books

Some publishers including Pratham Books and Tulika have also introduced bilingual picture books for kids that comprise stories written both in English and a particular regional language. Parents can introduce kids to some of these bilingual Hindi picture books, some of which are One And Many/Ek Aur Bahut, Look Up/Upar Dekho and The Birdie Post/Panchhi Post, to name a few.

Speak Hindi at home

To help your child learn Hindi, speaking in the language is as important as reading. Converse with your little one in Hindi at home and encourage other family members to do so too. And if Hindi isn’t your mother tongue, help them pick up the language from friends.
