According to research, a ménage à trois is on the mind of most millennials but only a small number have actually participated in one.
The study saw 274 (202 women, 72 men) heterosexual young adults take an online survey about their sexual experiences and preferences. It revealed that 64% of respondents (82% of men and 31% of women) reported an interest in threesomes but only 13% (24 % of men and 8 % of women) admitted to doing the deed.
“Taken together, these results suggest that young people are not judgmental about others engaging in MGTs but are not highly motivated to do so themselves,” the study stated.
Researchers say that the level of interest in a threeway was also dependent on who else was involved. Men’s keenness remained unaffected by the third person’s status. However, women preferred getting it on with people they knew, but only when they were the third wheel, not when it was involving a partner of their own.
Co-author Dr Ashley Thompson says that popular culture has played a significant role in the increasing popularity of the sex act.
“We have greater access to porn than ever before, so we see more sexual acts and behaviours, which increases interest. I speculate the same is true for threesomes and multiples,” Dr Thompson says.
“We are seeing a rise of other behaviours, like rates of anal sex, oral sex, and people claim it’s likely a result of how we’re being socialised.”
