FRIDAY, Nov. 9, 2018 — Homicides and suicides involving guns are on the rise in the United States, according to a federal government study.
The study revealed that in 2015 to 2016, there were 27,394 homicides involving a gun and 44,955 suicides involving guns, CNN reported. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data show that nationally, 4.4 per 100,000 people were killed by someone using a gun in 2015 to 2016, while the rate was 4.9 per 100,000 in the 50 largest metropolitan areas combined. In 2012 to 2013, the rates were 3.7 per 100,000 and 4.1 per 100,000, respectively, CNN reported.
The current rate of gun-related deaths is similar to that in 2006 to 2007, according to the study, published Nov. 9 in the CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
Research shows that the United States has the world’s highest rate of gun ownership by civilians, and the highest rate of gun-related deaths among industrialized countries, CNN reported.
