Salma Hayek is one of those legendary Hollywood beauties who rarely changes up her look. The actor, who turned 52 last weekend, is almost always seen with long, dark-brown hair — it's been her signature style since long before she made the transition from Mexican soap opera start to American movie star. But in her upcoming film, The Hummingbird Project, we get to see how Hayek would look like with gray hair. Spoiler alert: She looks amazing.
Stylist Jennifer Yepez posted several photos of Hayek in an Instagram post thanking the actor for inviting her to do her hair for the film, which is debuting at the Toronto International Film Festival. The photos show a few angles of Hayek's hairstyle, which appears to fall right in line with the trendy gray looks we've been seeing over the last couple of years, darker at the roots and getting gradually brighter and more silvery.
Alas, "it's a wig," Yepez tells Allure. So, no, Hayek hasn't decided to actually go gray — a photo she posted to Instagram from Toronto on Saturday afternoon shows her wearing the long, dark waves we've loved on her for so many years.

But had Hayek gone from nearly-black to silver hair, it would have been no small feat — and likely would have taken several sessions to achieve. "Any time hair is being lightened, there are disulfide sulfur bonds that are being broken," New York City-based hairstylist Christine McMillen told Allure earlier this year. "Over time, some of these bonds find their way back to each other, which is why it’s so important to wait between lightening sessions."
That's because, in order to achieve that perfect gray color, you can't just lighten dark hair a little. "To get your hair that smoky gray color, you need your strands to be platinum blonde," stylist Brittan White has told Allure. And once you finally switch to silver, there's plenty of maintenance involved. "Make sure your colorist uses a strong blue-purple pigmented toner afterward to get all the yellow out of your hair."
For now, it seems Hayek will hold on to her recognizable dark, glossy hair color, but at least now she knows that if she ever does decide to embrace gray hair, she'll look stunning.
