How neighborhood affects our diet

How healthy we nourish us, seems to depend also on what area we live in: those Who live in a good social environment or draws, eats healthier than people in poorer residential areas.

Finnish researchers have observed that the neighborhood in which someone lives has a direct effect on the diet of those Who live in an environment with a low socio-economic Status, eats more unhealthy than residents of a wealthy area. For the author of the Study Hanna Lagström of the University of Turku was particularly interesting that this was true only for the residents who lived through the entire period of study in the same area, but also for newcomers, the eighth about half of the respondents. People who moved to a neighborhood with higher socio-economic Status, ate healthier than those who moved to a less wealthy neighborhood.

What is covered the consumption of individual foods, which were adhered to the recommendations for the consumption of sausage, meat, fish and vegetables in good residential areas. Interestingly, there were residents in poorer neighborhoods more likely to the recommendations for whole grain products, and alcohol. For low-fat milk, fruits and berries, no correlations were observed.

In the study, researchers had studied about six years, whether there is a connection between the residential area and the diet of the inhabitants. 16.000 Finnish adults gave in a survey with information about their diet. On the basis of their address data were mapped on the national grid database of Statistics Finland a social environment. With the accuracy of a 250 x 250 metre grid, this database contains information on social and economic characteristics of all Finnish residents.
