“Spin classes and athleisure trends” could be behind the growing popularity of “designer vagina” surgery, The Independent reports.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of the labia – the lips or folds of skin that surround the vagina – and experts say it’s the fastest growing cosmetic surgery in the world.
According to plastic surgeon Dr David Cangello, the rise in SoulCycle devotees and the demand for labiaplasty are not “directly related” but the “demographics of the type of women who have the procedure are similar.”
“It tends to be women who are into their appearance and also active,” Dr Cangello told The Independent.
Ob-gyn Lauren Streicher previously told Women’s Health that women’s concerns about the appearance of their labia are growing in part thanks to trends in grooming.
“It used to be that nobody could see their labia and they never paid any attention [to it], and now everyone is looking and inspecting,” she says. “And of course, everyone thinks their labia isn’t as pretty as someone else’s labia.”
But it’s not all about aesthetics, Dr Cangello told The Independent.
“Now it is catering to women who find cycling or others forms of exercise cause discomfort.”
Ob-gyn Pari Ghodsi previously told Women’s Health that, “If women are truly uncomfortable wearing tight clothing or riding their bikes, then it is an appropriate procedure.”
“But I do not recommend it purely for cosmetic reasons.”
If you’re experiencing unexplained pain, burning and discomfort in the vulva, speak to a doctor or gynaecologist ASAP.
