‘Fishing’ Is The Latest Dating Trend To Do The Rounds Online

Shaveducking, Cushioning. Benching. Bread crumbing – there’s seemingly a million and one ways to do the dodgy when it comes to dating in 2018. And now, there’s a new method to add to the list. And this one is reason enough to lose hope in love forever:

Fishing.

Coined by Elite Daily, it’s a term that describes when someone messages a bunch of people (aka fish) at once to see who is interested in hooking up. Once they see who takes the bait, they sus out the one they most like the look of and ignore (or throw back) the rest.

Brutal? Yup. And doesn’t just happen on dating apps  – the seemingly out-of-the-blue “how are you?” Facebook message that you just know has been copied/pasted to 10 others? A classic manoeuvrer amongst keen fishermen.

Now technically, casting a wide net isn’t a crime. In fact, it can be kinda handy if you’re looking keep your options open. But it sure as sh*t doesn’t feel great to be on the other end of it.

The biggest signs to watch out for? Generic texts at certain times (i.e. only Fri/Sat nights) and long delays in responses. As for how to go about it… ignore the bait altogether. After all, there’s plenty more fish in the sea.
